Leaving religion isn’t the finish line.
It’s the beginning of a much deeper process.

For many people, the beliefs may be gone—but the patterns aren’t.

  • The perfectionism

  • The guilt and self-doubt

  • The black-and-white thinking

  • The feeling of not fully knowing who you are

That’s what this group is for.

What this is:

  • Untangling internalized religious messaging

  • Rebuilding identity outside of a belief system

  • Developing healthier thinking patterns

  • Strengthening self-trust

  • Connecting with others who actually get it

❋ Each session combines:

  • Education (research + psychological frameworks)

  • Guided discussion and participation

  • Practical tools + handouts

What this is not:

❋ This is not therapy and not designed for acute religious trauma treatment.

This group is for reconstruction and growth—for people who are ready to actively engage in rebuilding their identity and life after religion.

What We’ll Cover Over 12 Weeks

This isn’t random discussion.
Each week builds on the last—giving you a structured path from untangling → to rebuilding.

Week 1: Creating Safety

Focus: Foundation + group container
You’ll be introduced to the group structure, agreements, and expectations while establishing psychological safety.

You’ll:

  • Understand group guidelines and informed consent

  • Build trust and connection with others

  • Begin identifying what safety means for you

Week 2: Your Exit Story

Focus: Making sense of your transition
Leaving religion is a major life shift—this is where you begin to organize and understand your story.

You’ll:

  • Explore your personal exit narrative

  • Identify common themes across group experiences

  • Feel less alone in your process

Week 3: Rebuilding Hope

Focus: Hope vs. toxic positivity
Many people leave religion and lose their framework for hope. We rebuild it—intentionally.

You’ll:

  • Differentiate real hope from forced optimism

  • Identify what feels meaningful to hope for now

  • Begin reconnecting to a future that feels like yours

Week 4: Who Am I Now?

Focus: Identity reconstruction
When religion shaped your identity, leaving can feel disorienting. This is where rebuilding begins.

You’ll:

  • Understand how deconstruction impacts identity

  • Explore emerging parts of yourself

  • Begin defining who you are outside of religion

Week 5: Emotional Expression

Focus: Understanding and expressing emotions
Religious environments often limit emotional range. This week expands it.

You’ll:

  • Understand “religious residue” in emotional patterns

  • Build emotional literacy

  • Learn a practical framework for expressing emotions and needs

Week 6: Core Values

Focus: What actually matters to you
Many people realize their values were inherited—not chosen.

You’ll:

  • Identify your personal values separate from religion

  • Explore how aligned your current life is with those values

  • Begin making value-based decisions

Week 7: Grief

Focus: Processing loss
Even when leaving is the right choice, there is real loss.

You’ll:

  • Understand the stages of grief

  • Apply them to your post-religious experience

  • Normalize the complexity of what you’re feeling

Week 8: Understanding Influence (BITE Model)

Focus: How high-control systems shape you
This week brings clarity to what happened—and why it affected you so deeply.

You’ll:

  • Learn the BITE Model

  • Recognize how behavior, thoughts, emotions, and information were influenced

  • Identify healthy vs. unhealthy dynamics in relationships and systems

Week 9: Healthy Boundaries

Focus: Reclaiming autonomy in relationships
High-control religion often overrides personal boundaries—this week restores them.

You’ll:

  • Understand internal vs. external boundaries

  • Identify where your boundaries may have been impacted

  • Practice implementing healthy boundaries in real life

Week 10: Spirituality Without Religion

Focus: Redefining meaning, ritual, and connection
You get to decide what (if anything) spirituality looks like now.

You’ll:

  • Identify signs of spiritual abuse and when to seek therapy-level support

  • Explore personal definitions of spirituality (or non-spirituality)

  • Create one meaningful ritual or grounding practice

Week 11: Making Meaning

Focus: Reframing your past
This is where your story becomes yours again.

You’ll:

  • Identify ways your experience has shaped growth

  • Develop empowering interpretations of your past

  • Integrate your story without being defined by it

Week 12: Integration & Closing

Focus: Reflecting, integrating, and moving forward
Endings matter—this one is intentional.

You’ll:

  • Identify your growth over 12 weeks

  • Process the group ending

  • Revisit your “hope tree” and future direction
